Re: “Election day in Pulaski County School District, Pine Bluff. UPDATE

LOL at everything you just said about PCSSD & Sherwood detachment. Except the district overall being unfriendly to millage actions part. But even that is wrong because a millage extension in PCSSD has never been defeated in the last 30 years.

Re: “After tax vote, what next for Little Rock School District?

Real talk, Max.

You know as well as I do that the extension's defeat was a Pyrrhic victory. This, admittedly uninspiring, level of support from WLR for a millage cannot even be assumed in the future and that local control can not be assumed to keep or find a superintendent of the caliber of Mike Poore. At this point, it is not unthinkable that the 12.4 mills may never get extended if something doesn't change.

You also know what's coming next and it will be very painful.

The anti-millage people in their short-sighted zeal are on record about using every dime of debt-service for facilities. They are also on record about how the administration "hid" $25M from them in the budget that's there and could be used for facilities. That's a lot of cover for Poore to cut all the way to the bone.

And you know what's a luxury item? Block schedule at Central. Busing to Central. Under-enrolled AP classes at Central. Inflated levels of certified staff health insurance subsidies that are disappearing due to the deseg agreement.

I am not chortling about the defeat or relishing what comes next. I always thought Kurrus' financial ideas were spot on. But I can clearly see from your tone here that you know as well as I do that those who, in their blind rage, opposed the millage using any and all lines of argumentation may not fully understand the whirlwind they will reap.

Re: “No Taxation Without Representation group forms for Little Rock school tax vote UPDATE

Take it a step further Max.

1. LRSD can still issue bonds if a re-finance fails
2. It just needs to cut more from existing operating in order to pay for the bonds.

Baker Kurrus had already suggested in 2015 to the state board that the district cut $50M from operating. Poore has only cut about $37M so far. If the extension fails, Poore can simply go to "Kurrus level" cuts and use those savings to issue 2nd lien bonds to pay for most of what he is asking for now.

I expect that's why LREA is not going to come out against the re-finance. Those "licks" (as you call them) to operating budget to pay for the capital improvements will land on teachers and probably more school closures.

You should be more honest about what a NO vote would mean and what Kurrus' intentions were with respect to budget cutting.

Re: “Amazon: Is it collecting sales taxes in Arkansas?

Yes, I order from Amazon all the time and it has been collecting sales tax.

I ordered a bird feeder on Feb 27th and there was no sales tax.
I ordered some sandwich bags on Mar 14th and was charged tax.

In all 11 orders of my orders since the 14th have been charged tax. I didn't have any orders between 2/27 and 3/14.

Re: “Justice Department changeover begins

"One of the things that we didnt want to do was to disrupt the continuity of the offices and pull people out of positions where we thought there might be a danger that that might have on the continuity--the effectiveness of the offices. But...elections matter--it is our intention to have the U.S. Attorneys that are selected by President Obama in place as quickly as they can."

Re: “Charter school building takeover bill falls a vote short

I'm as right wing as they come, but I'm having a hard time understanding why Charter schools that want to open in Little Rock need help with facilities. Two of the most successful charter schools in Pulaski County, eSTEM and LISA run out of the following buildings:

1. old Federal Court building
2. old Movie Theatre
3. old Best Buy store
4. vacant office building

On the other hand, the shit that goes on out in the hinterland like Helena where a school is closed and squatted on by the school district out of spite is a different matter. These little piece of shit school districts rightfully deserve the state's boot up their ass.

I wish there was some kind of population cap or something that would apply so metro areas like Little Rock could be exempt. There is plenty of space available for charters in this area and they don't need help.

Re: “Schools and westward sprawl on Little Rock City Board agenda today

LRSD might get something if you called up the equalization board and asked them to set your house's taxable rate to its assessed rate, Max. Either that or a nice wash sale on your house.

I doubt many West Pulaski types literally give a shit about being annexed into Little Rock or its sewer system. I bet West Pulaski would trade no city sewer for LR renouncing its extra-territoriality halo. I do think however that city sewer is highly over-rated and mostly helps developers trying to build these mini-Chenal developments in West Pulaski.
