It is quite eye opening to read primary source documents. All to often history is romantized--a la "Gone With the Wind".
The question we need to ask ourselves with regards to history--all of history--is whether or not certain aspects, men, ideas deserve our celebration. I make this point not to assert that we should whitewash history. Celebrating is entirely different from knowing.

One way to settle the debate would be to look at what the states said in their secession letters. I'll leave the link below and Shannon can take a look. I will say that Mississippi's is a great read.
