Re: “Dozens of schools, including those run by state school chief, have ignored law by punishing truants with out-of-school suspension

Keep in mind that attendance weighs heavily in the school report card grade calculation. ADE officials explain all kinds of reasons for truancy and call it a family issue. Yet school grades are determined in large part by all those issues which affect attendance. So are the grades really telling the community that they are failing? How productive is that? Kicking someone who is already down is really not a sound educational philosophy yet here we are.

Furthermore, failing schools have more than their share of this issue. They work with families, who are sometimes homeless, to find solutions. These efforts and relationships take time and trust. Schools are willing to keep trying because it is the right thing to do, even though they know which families are wrecking their attendance data.

How long before schools push back and force the issue of proof of address to get them off their rolls?

That is the reality this grading system has created.

Schools have always tried to help with attendance. All those grades reflect are the struggles of the population in that area. Poverty is the culprit, not lack of intelligence or good teaching.
