Most who make less than $21K don't pay taxes!

Re: “School employees decry the patch on insurance

One other thing to remember is this is just one part of a much larger plan to make this the best program in the country. This deal didn't get screwed up overnight and it's not going to get fixed overnight as well. All I can say is please be patient. It's GOING to be better. And by the way most plans around the country are getting hit with increases. It's just a sad reality of what's happening.

Re: “School employees decry the patch on insurance

The dealings weren't done in secret. Heck the rates aren't finalized. The 600% increase was one hypothetical scenario where the employee only rate on the Bronze plan was raised from $11 to $60 a month but that's not going to happen. Every other increase was either slightly higher or actually lower for the employee. Also the maximum out of pocket BY LAW can only be $12,000 and that's just on family coverage.

The ad had information that is either misleading or not factual.

Re: “New Supreme Court justice Rhonda Wood plays loose with facts on her campaign money

Poison Apple thanks for your post. I realize that I just signed up yesterday and yes that would make my motives seem questionable but I can assure you that no one asked me to write anything. In fact had anyone known I was writing this they would beg me to stop. I'm not saying the issues that you or anyone is bringing up doesn't need to be addressed. It does. I totally agree. But limiting campaign contributions or things like that are just a part of the larger issue. We also need to address things like tort reform. Outside of such things like payroll and the cost of caring for the patient, the liability coverage those facilities have to pay for is outrageous.

And do our judges need to run for office or be appointed for a period of time? That's another thing to consider.

Again I'm not saying we limit large judgements in the event of willful negligence. I'm only saying that the facts of this case don't justify a $5.2 million dollar judgement. That's all. One thing to remember is that we all pay for those large judgements not just the owner because our tax dollars help support these facilities.

And as far as the number of staff in a facility well that is regulated by the government. Besides in this case I'm not sure it would have helped the lady who died. Just read the facts of the case. That's all I ask.

I also ask that you don't rush to pass judgement on someone solely because of what you've read. As with everything there's two sides to every story. And if there was any signs of "the fix being in" then that should come out in the appeal if there is one.

I truly value your opinion and am thankful we live in a place where anyone is allowed to voice their concerns. Thx.

Re: “New Supreme Court justice Rhonda Wood plays loose with facts on her campaign money

I've had enough. I've worked with nursing homes for over 10 years and I can say with out a shadow of a doubt that if it wasn't for people like Michael Morton nursing homes in Arkansas would still be the dank, dark urine smelling dungeons they used to be.

And let me be clear, I haven't worked with him personally or any of the facilities he has an interest in. I do know him personally and all I can say is thank god because my wife's grandmother lived out the last 18 months of her life there. She was treated with dignity and respect. We never had to worry about her safety.

You want to know why they contribute so much money to these judges? So they can have a fighting chance to not lose everything to some unscrupulous ambulance chasing attorney who was only out for themselves. Now I'm not saying that the original award of $5.2 million is out of line in certain cases but in this case it was and here's why...

As sad and unfortunate as it was that the resident passed away let's not forget one thing. It was simply an accident. Nothing more. $5.2 million is a judgement rendered in a case that involved willful negligence which was not the deal here. Check the facts of the case and then tell me if the original award was not excessive.

Now I'm not defending all nursing homes or owners because like in every profession there are opportunists that are trying to work the system for their benefit. But I can assure you that Michael Morton isn't one of them. He is a good person who genuinely cares for ALL of his residents. And if you don't believe it then go look at his facilities and see how clean they are, how nice the staff are and how they look after the residents. Hell even the food is decent.

Here's an idea...why don't you who are casting the biggest stones go lock yourself in a room for 8 hours with 50 elderly people who are suffering from such problems as cancer, deafness, blindness, dementia or are just depressed because their worthless children basically dumped them there and haven't visited them since AND THEN tell me if it doesn't take someone special to care for them. And trust me those who work for Michael are special people. For the most part everyone who works with the elderly are. But they are human and they are prone to honest mistakes. Not malicious ones. Honest ones.

Personally if I was going to be upset with anyone I would be upset with the attorneys as their fees were at least 35% of the damages. Now that's damn near criminal. And don't give me the excuse of had they not won they wouldn't have collected. Had they not thought they could get something they wouldn't have taken the case in the first place.

So get off your high horses and stop trying to make a conspiracy out of anything. Also understand that all guys like Michael are doing is making sure you deadbeat children will have a decent place for you to dump your poor parents once you've gone through all their money and have no further reason to keep them around.
